Goran painting?

Postby sgrimm01 » Thu Feb 28, 2008 5:36 pm

I was in the Metropolitan Museum with my painting class today, and near the end of our discussion, we came across this painting of the Russian author Vsevolod Garshin, by Ilia Repin. So, while my instructor went into a detail discussion of the modeling of the head and subtle variations of value and color intensity, I...wasn't paying much attention, and snuck out my cameraphone and snapped a picture.

Okay, so there's a beard... and he's Russian... but the likeness is uncanny. Anyone else agree?

(If this would be better in another thread, lemme know and I'll move it. There didn't seem to be any precedent for this, though. :D )

No beard for comparison, but the angle is close...what do you think?

Editing to tuck a third pic in..

Haha, thank you! I was looking for an angle that was similar- these are pretty close.

I'm tempted to either a) photoshop a beard onto one of the screencaps, or b) photoshop the beard /out/ of the painting. Purely for academic and artistic interests, of course... :D

My reaction was "wow". I think it looks A LOT like GV. But I would certainly encourage the photoshopping because that's always fun!

It's not the same angle, but I did find this for comparison:

I only see a strong resemblance in the eyebrows though. everything else looked 'off' enough to my eyes to see only that bit of resemblance.

I think there's a good resemblance - and what's more, the sitter's initials are GV's in reverse. It's fate I tell ya!

Q: What do you call an Australian with a bottle of Champagne?

A: A waiter.
