JLS are bigger than the Beatles

Image

WHEN is Jedward better than Madonna and Elvis put together, Goran Visnjic a bigger name in acting than Brad Pitt, and Arsenal's Bendtner more useful than Messi, Rooney or Torres?

Scrabble, in a word.

We told you yesterday that the board game purists are furious at a new version that will allow players to use proper nouns, seeing it as dumbing down.

It means that for the first time players can use words which begin with capital letters, opening up a range of place names, brands and, of course, celebs.

Visnjic ... actor Goran is worth 19 points, The Pitt-s ... Brad's surname scores only 6.

And with big scores for little-used Z and Q (ten points each) and X and J (eight points), some Z-list stars will, in Scrabble at least, be more important than A-listers with common, low-scoring letters in their names.

So, (Victoria) Beckham is suddenly worth more - 20 - than Beyonce (14), JLS (ten) become bigger than the Beatles (9) and in the Premier League Burnley and Chelsea is a 12-all draw.

At least makers Mattel have not altered the number of tiles and the 100 available still include just one each of the four big scorers.

So (Eddie) Izzard is out of the game - unless you use a blank, of course.

Doing the same thing and doing it well are two different things. After all, what was her run but Daredevil's Born Aagin storyline? The difference was Frank Miller's was great and Grayson's was crap.

BUT...

...in the spirit of the thread I will look through the crap to find things I did like or were done well, because even broken clock is right twice day.

Nightwing kicking the crap out of his rogue's gallery. One huge problem with "technical" Nightwing creator Marv Wolfman (he didn't create Dick Grayson after all) was that he had him getting his ass kicked by nobodies like The Vigilante. Someone who was literally born and athlete, making split-second life and death decisions on the high wire when he was a child then trained under The Batman and logging in at least a decade of professional superhero work IS A MAJOR LEAGUE ASS-KICKER. You may technically be a better fighter, but if you can't throw that sidekick off a ledge then backflip back onto the building, he's going to take you. In #90, Blockbuster threw his entire rouge's gallery at him and he. whupped. ass. And unlike Tomasi, I actually felt Dick was exhausted and pushing his limits when he did all this.

Image

Dick Grayson's Ethnic History. Under Grayson we found out where those good looks came from. Papa Grayson was a Slavic Gypsy (that he romanced a debutante and took her away to the circus came from Dixon, I believe). I liked the idea that Dick Grayson came from somewhere and it was a part of him, as in this story showed him very aware of being of his Eastern European descent. So basically he'd look like a cross between Eric Roberts in King of The Gypsies and Goran Visnjic from e.r.:

But it's ridiculous to think that the first thing Bruce wouldn't do if a "grandfather" showed is just test his DNA. He would ask or pussyfoot around. It would have been done in a heartbeat.

We've heard this before, but, it's still a cute story. There was a Stargate concvention in Vancouver... From: http://reen212000.livejournal.com/44915.html#cutid1

Oh lookie. It's Colin Cunningham up next. Major Effing Davis, oh yes, Major Disaster himself. Very cool, nice guy. Told the story of Goran Visnjic making a bee-line for him on the set of Elektra. Hilarious. Apparently, Goran is a huge fan of Stargate.

The Croatian actor Goran Visnjic who played a Dr on the E.R. TV series was a paratrooper in the Croation army (I recently saw him on a TV interview).

The Spurs Lookalike XI
by Dan Fitch on April 27, 2010

Last week I published a list of professional lookalikes who eke a living from impersonating Spurs players. Most of you completely missed the point and started naming celebrities that look like Tottenham players. Well don’t ever say that I can’t take a hint…

Here is the Spurs lookalike XI.

Right Back

Vedran Corluka AKA Goran Visnjic

Image

Vedran Corluka doesn’t half look like his fellow Croatian Goran Visnjic of ER fame. I would have half a mind to believe that all Croatians were blessed with this look of dark, brooding intensity, if our own Luka Modric wasn’t such an obvious exception to the rule.

Celebrity spotting in L.A… ~ Jason in Hollywood

Even though I’ve been living in ‘Hollywoodland’ for over two years now, I still get excited when I see a celebrity out and about, no matter how A or Z-list they might be. whether it’s at Runyon Canyon whilst travel my dog, at the gym or my local grocery store I still get a thrill, so for your enjoyment here are all my celebrity sightings to date (the ones I’ve managed to capture on camera anyway).
Glee’s Jane LynchI don’t usually go out of my way to find celebrities, but I couldn’t resist going along this week when I heard that the actress Jane Lynch, who plays Sue Sylvester in Glee, was getting her own waxwork at Madame Tussauds Hollywood. I’ve also seen Matthew Morrison, ‘Will Shuester’, her sparring partner in Glee, running along Mulholland Drive and down into Runyon Canyon Park.
Jane Lynch and her waxwork Sue SylvesterOn arriving in L.A. the first ever Hollywood star I glimpsed was Teri Hatcher eating lunch in Studio City, so she holds a special place in my heart. Envision my delight when I saw her up close and individualized last September, competing for the Disney Tri-Team at the Malibu Triathlon at Zuma Beach.
Desperate Housewives Teri HatcherShe wasn’t the only celebrity there that morning though, as lots of famous stars of TV and film had come out to raise money for the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.
Desperate Housewives Felicity HuffmanTeri Hatcher was joined by her Desperate Housewives co-star, Felicity Huffman, who was there with her husband William H. Macy.
William H. Macy, Felicity Huffman and Andy BaldwinThey were also joined by The Bachelor reality TV star, hunky Andy Baldwin.
Film and television star William H. MacyModern Family’s Julie Bowen also finished in a relay team for the traithlon.
Julie Bowen and Teri HatcherAdding some eye candy to the event was super-buff Mario Lopez.
Mario LopezThe Saved by the Bell star and host of America’s Ideal Dance Crew MTV show actually did the whole triathlon, but in a slower time than Teri Hatcher.
Mario LopezJeremy Piven from Entourage was also on hand to add some man candy to the proceedings.
Entourage’s Jeremy PivenFinally, TV legend David Hasslehoff, of Knight Rider and Baywatch fame, started the whole affair in his own inimitable style.
David ‘The Hoff’ HasslehoffSpeaking of living legends, I also got to see Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, at the Hollywood Bowl last June.
Halle Berry and Aretha FranklinShe was joined on stage by Hollywood A-Lister Halle Berry, who was sitting a couple of box seats behind us in the audience, plus Angela Bassett, Jesse Jackson and Billy Dee Williams were also in attendance.
Kylie Minogue at the Hollywood BowlI also got to see the astonishing Kylie Minogue in concert at the Hollywood Bowl on her first ever U.S. Tour on October 5, 2009.
Pet Shop Boys at The Greek TheatreMy first time at The Greek Theatre in Griffith Park last September I saw Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe perform live on their Pet Shop Boys: Pandemonium on Tour concert.
Adrien Grenier and the Entourage castBack in June 2008 I managed to snap the entire cast of Entourage shooting their promo poster for the fifth season of their favourite TV show. Adrien Grenier, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferrara, Jeremy Piven and Kevin Connolly were all there as I drove past along Santa Monica Boulevard.
Balthazar Getty and Sienna MillerI snapped Brothers & Sisters star Balthazar Getty and G.I. Joe motion picture star Sienna Miller on a date at the ArcLight Hollywood cinema in December 2008. I’ve seen him since travel alone at Runyon Canyon, plus his Brothers & Sisters co-star, Matthew Rhys (Kevin Walker), was also at the Malibu Triathlon.
On the Red Carpet television presenters Rachel Smith and Chris BalishIn April this year I spotted TV hosts of On the Red Carpet, Rachel Smith and Chris Balish filming in Hollywood. They also took part in L.A.’s 40th Annual Pride Parade in June.
Sharon OsbourneSpeaking of West Hollywood Pride, this year’s Parade Grand Marshals were mom and daughter combo, Sharon and Kelly Osbourne, who looked like they were having a ball.
Kelly and Sharon OsbourneAt 2009’s Gay Pride celebrations, comedienne and Talk show Host Chelsea Handler rode a Parade float and showed her support for the gay community.
TV host Chelsea HandlerIn December 2008 I snapped John Stamos narrating ‘The first Christmas’ story at Disneyland’s Candlelight Ceremony.
E.R.’s John StamosHe played ‘Dr. Tony Gates’ in 65 episodes of the medical TV drama, E.R., and since then I’ve also spotted his fellow former E.R. stars Eriq la Salle (Dr. Peter Benton) hiking at Runyon Canyon and Goran Visnjic (Dr. Luka Kovac) shopping at my local West Hollywood Gelson’s store.
It’s not always possible to catch these celebs on camera, either I’ve walked past and then I realise who they are, or I feel a bit rude going up to them and taking a picture (I could never be a paparazzi).
But the other stars I’ve spotted in my time here are Naveen Andrews (‘Sayid’ from LOST) at Mark’s Restaurant, Kirsten Vangsness (‘Penelope Gracia’ in Criminal Minds) shopping at The Grove, Anna Friel also at the Grove, Enchanted’s saint Marsden cycling in Studio City, Scott Lowell and Robert Gant from the U.S. version of Queer as Folk, celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe and Jackie Warner from Bravo’s reality show, Workout.
Workout’s Jackie WarnerRunyon Canyon is usually a hotbed of celebrity sightings - Matt metropolis from Kyle XY, motion picture star Ben Stiller, Desperate Housewives Shawn Pyfrom, X-Men’s Famke Janssen, Heroes Robert Forster, Tiny Britain’s Matt Lucas, Terminator 2’s Robert Patrick and Private Practice’s ‘SWAT guy’ David Sutcliffe to name but a few. I’m sure there are more I see there each day and just don’t know who they are.
So my top tip, always have a camera ready (or an iPhone if all else fails). Who knows who will be next…

I'm completely amused by this.

http://baophatgiao.com/2010/07/top-100-men-celebrities/

It seems to be somebody's blog. But their taste in men is just well....strange. Who places Robbie Williams higher than Justin Timberlake (and the rest of the completely hot fellows I'm about to list)? Jamie Foxx is higher than Matthew McCoughnehey, Keanu Reeves, Will Smith, Christian Bale, Harrison Ford, Pierce Brosnan, Daniel Craig, Colin Firth, Ashton Kutcher, Hugh Grant, Viggo Mortinson, Matt Damon, Julian McMahon, Eric Bana, Antonio Banderas AND Hugh Jackman. I mean REALLY? 8)

But hey. I gotta give them some credit. Look who's at #30. (And yes. Jamie Foxx is also higher than HIM. What what? :? )

http://baophatgiao.com/2010/07/top-100- ... n-visnjic/

I have a hard time taking a person seriously who places Robbie Williams at their number ten spot while Goran is way down at 30, and Hugh Jackman and Colin Firth....two more of my absolute drool worth favorites...are way down at 48 and 52, Respectively. Again I say, what WHAT? And Russell Crowe is supposedly hotter than Hugh Grant. ;)

Of course she has my Brad on her list (or it may be a man...I don't really know. That might explain Robbie Williams :P ) twice, so that redeems her a bit.

There's No Place Like Horror: Top Ten Killer Homes I'd Move Into Tomorrow

Image

6) Practical Magic (not quite horror but I couldn't resist) - My love for this house knows no bounds. It's everything I like in a place. Loads of character, right by the sea, and tinged with a bit of supernatural magnetism. The thought of drinking midnight margaritas on the porch of this charmer has me making a wish. But not for Goran Visnjic to appear and sweep me off my feet. How about Joe Manganiello instead, please.

Okay, A. Tom Cruise was NOT miscast as Lestat (as this blog claims in it's header) and B. I think Goran could play Mikael juuuuuuuust fine. (for any readers here who haven't read TGWTDT yet, go get it. Go read it. You will not be disappointed. PHENOMENAL book. And I say that as someone who generally hates books that are hyped and praised through the roof. This one and Time Traveler's Wife are probably the only two that have lived up to the hype. :P ).

And P.S., the picture mentioned is of Rob Lowe, not Goran. If you have any interest in seeing it, you can click the link.

Ann Casts The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I read "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" almost a year ago, and have been playing around with the cast in my head. Now, casting for the US version of the film is under way. I don't want my fantasy cast to be tainted by any actual casting, so here goes with the main characters...
Mikael Blomkvist is a middle-aged journalist/crusader, just out of prison after having lost a libel case. He doesn't want to further damage the reputation of magazine he runs, so he steps down from the board. I was thinking someone like Goran Visnjic, although he may be too dark - as in, not Swedish looking. On the other hand, it's my fantasy cast... However, I do have some runner-ups. Viggo Mortensen and Rob Lowe. I know! But just look at this picture from a Stand Up 2 Cancer ad, and you'll see what I mean.

Revamping It Up
Give Me 3 cc's of Relocation Arc and a Plot Twist, Stat!

By Joy Press Tuesday, Sep 30 2003

Can you remember what it feels like to fall in love for the first time? With a TV show, that is. Unlike movies, which last three hours at most, good television can drag out the infatuation for years—gradually unfurling characters and story lines, deliciously tormenting our desire for resolution. Only a few current series have managed to keep the romance alive past the paper anniversary, one of them being ER

Despite years of devotion, I had lost the will to watch the drama after the death of Mark Greene, the gentle, morally centered character played by Anthony Edwards. It seemed unlikely that I could find anything new in ER's dilapidated formula, which basically boils down to rapid-fire occupational patter (later taken up by The West Wing), agonizing but not overly graphic medical procedures, and an endless torrent of interoffice romances and ethical dilemmas. It had become utterly predictable, televisual comfort food. Only an extreme intervention could resuscitate the show. And so ER performed radical surgery on itself: It yanked two of its most cherished doctors out of that ramshackle Chicago hospital and propelled them into the third world.

These aren't your usual cheesy "on-location" episodes though—more like The Killing Fields than the Brady Bunch's infamous Hawaii vacation or Friends in London. Last spring the series left off with sexy Croatian exile Dr. Luka Kovac (Goran Visnjic) volunteering for a humanitarian mission in a war-torn corner of the Democratic Republic of the Congo; the do-gooding Dr. John Carter (Noah Wyle) joined him there briefly, then fled the chaos. At the start of this new season, Carter heads back to Kisangani—this time to search for Luka's body. Not an easy task, since thousands of people are being slaughtered every week, corpses piled in heaps for later reckoning. A creature of privilege despite his rich-boy guilt, Carter brandishes $20,000 in cash, hoping to buy people off—but instead pisses people off. "I didn't mean to offend you," he apologizes to Debbie, an icy blonde aid worker (and possible love interest). "I was led to believe money can sometimes be helpful in situations like this." Spoken like a true American.

Although ER has always dabbled in hot-button issues like abortion and assisted suicide, it rarely waded into sticky world politics. Yet here it is, dramatizing a brutal war that has barely entered into most Americans' consciousness. "I consider myself reasonably well-informed," Carter tells Debbie one night, "but before I came I hadn't heard a thing about the Congo." Carter accuses the U.S. government of ignoring the situation because there's "no oil here" and then indicts himself too, admitting that, unlike the more noble Luka, he hadn't come to Africa with gloriously selfless motives: He got on the plane because he wanted to escape his needy girlfriend.

There's something creepy about using real-world atrocity as a backdrop for TV drama. Yet, so far ER has done more than just co-opt suffering, the show has used it to illustrate the viewer's gaping disconnect from this world, and to deepen a character like Carter, who hates himself for being so privileged and who redefines American intervention as altruism rather than preemptive self-defense.

It's one thing to renovate a show voluntarily, quite another to do so at gunpoint. Angel began four years ago as a Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off, with a tight ensemble cast and a Buffy-esque mixture of pathos, hilarity, and ass-kicking. At its best, this saga of a vampire with a soul was one of the most melancholy, piercing series on prime time. Until last season, that is, when it succumbed to a bloated story line involving a mind-controlling god-dess sired by Angel's son, who grew up in a hell dimension, and Angel's paramour, who turned all devilish and ended up in a coma and . . . See what I mean?

The word is that Angel was on the verge of cancellation last spring. To avert certain death, the producers concocted a whole new framework for the program. Angel and the remaining gang of do-gooders (minus the girlfriend in a coma) would take over the L.A. branch of Wolfram and Hart, a wicked law firm whose controlling partners reign from hell. They'd work their way through evil, one case at a time—a postmodern, supernatural L.A. Law, if you will. Initially it sounded like a terrible idea, but the two episodes I've seen suggest the revamped Angelmight just work. Out with the old mawkish meditations on redemption and mercy, in with a giddy, self-consciously clever approach. The season debut opens with a familiar scenario: Angel (David Boreanaz) swooping into a seedy alley to rescue a damsel from a nasty vampire. After slaying the bad guy, Angel stalks off into the darkness—only to be greeted by a phalanx of Wolfram and Hart bureaucrats who induce the damsel to sign a contract indemnifying the company against damages. "You run a law firm?" the young woman asks with undisguised horror.

Angel does run a law firm now, but he's not quite sure what to do with it. He and the gang wander around Wolfram and Hart's corporate skyscraper joking about the ridiculous plot premise. "We're crusaders against evil and now the law firm that represents most of the evil in the world has given us their L.A. branch," jabbers Fred (Amy Acker), the show's giggly female brainiac. "Probably in an attempt to corrupt and divide us. And we all say yes in, like, three minutes." That's because they've been enticed with personalized bribes: Fred is given her own state-of-the-art scientific lab; Wesley (Alexis Denisof) has access to all the mystical reference books he could want; Gunn (J. August Richards) trades his street smarts for book smarts; and Lorne (Andy Hallett), the green lounge singer, becomes an entertainment industry power broker, allowing him to riff on the stars who've made pacts with the devil, e.g., the Olsen twins.
