Ah, it's always nice when another Goran fan surfaces on the world wide web...from the blog: Musings from a muddy island by Juliet Doyle http://julietdoyle.blogspot.com/2008/01/saturday-slump.htm

Saturday slump

I don't watch a huge amount of telly. But when I do, I don't approach it in constructive, multi-tasking fashion. I don't knit, or iron, or mend things, or do anything useful at all. I simply slump. On a sofa. Surrounded by cushions, with my feet up on a stool, and a glass of wine to hand.

Sorry. It's not an edifying image. And it explains why, unlike some of my more industrious fellow bloggers, I have no sumptuous photographs of glorious scarves and socks and shawls to post here for your delectation. All I have to show for my telly-time is the odd cork or two and maybe, if I'm lacking in willpower, the wrappings from the fair-trade, dark chocolate cherry brandy liqueurs which the Mersea Co-op was selling off after Christmas at £1 a box. One pound!! A box!

Well, what's a girl to do, I ask you? That's about 5p a choc! And nowhere near their sell-by date yet. And delicious. And plain chocolate is immensely beneficial, medically speaking. Lowers blood-pressure and everything. I don't think it contains any calories, either. Well, not any I care to be informed about. So, anyway, I stockpiled.

And so the scene is set. I sort through the vast array of zappers, wondering which one will actually turn the telly on and select the channel I want to watch. I press a few buttons and, lo! It is ER!

Image

Now I can't stand Casualty and I seriously hate Holby City and I avoid TV Soaps like the very plague. So why do I love ER with such devoted and undying passion?

It is, I assure you, nothing to do with the fact that it once starred George Clooney because - alone amongst women - I do not and never have found Mr Clooney attractive. In fact I find the general adulation of his acting abilities rather mystifying, too.

Goran Višnjić as Dr Kovac is an entirely different matter, however - I freely confess. Sigh. Yet he's not in the current series, and I'm as enthralled as ever. Maybe it's the lightening speed of the action, the quick-fire dialogue, the high-calibre acting, the intense, dense, claustrophobia of so much of it. Maybe it's the refreshing unslushiness (for a US production) of its handling of death, disaster and love. Perhaps its the non-formulaic approach to the construction of each episode. The show rarely looks tired or shows its age.

=============================
There is more to the blog, but that's the end of the Goran/ER references, by all means, stop by and share the Goran love with her and let her know she's not alone.

I think I just found my soulmate! Who happens to share my GV addiction!

While I can see, [in a detached sort of way] why women would sigh over George Clooney, I too am one of the few women who recognize he has 'it' but who aren't affected by his particular flavour.

GV, however, is another spice altogether - whenever I see him or hear his voice, I am caught up in the fascination all over again with this living work of art. I could (and have) watch and listen to him for hours at a time.

Clooney, Pitt...? pfffft

Gone Hollywood Ga-Ga

I don't know how many authors/publishers who work with small, independent presses have this experience but it seems like lately I have received a surprising number of "Hollywood calling" letters and phone calls. The letters come on very professional looking stationary from companies that say they are Public Relations firms, or author's agents. The phone calls start out with "Hello, let me introduce myself, I'm the guy who's going to get your novel (fill in blank) in front of (fill in director or star) .. blah-blah-blah."

Now fortunately I'm a cranky skeptic about these things and I pretty much tell them all the same thing, "Sure, bring me an offer." I rarely hear from them after that. See I've noticed this little caveat in the letters about me agreeing to compensate them for their costs while representing me to Clint Eastwood or Nicole Kidman or whatever name they think I will be impressed by. Well, I AM impressed and I'll be even more impressed when they bring me conclusive proof that they have ever even been in the same Zip Code with the people they claim to have access to. Maybe I'm being a crank but till their check to ME clears the bank I ain't signin' nothin'.

Every new business endeavor automatically spawns half a dozen associated rackets. I'm not saying that these Hollywood whiz kids are scam artists --- they have their dreams, too --- but they are running a bit of a racket, in my opinion. I wish them luck and when they call me with something that doesn't make my Bullshit Detector start flashing, I'll happily pay attention. Still, it is a lovely dream.

Since The Old Mermaid's Tale has been out a number of readers have emailed to say they think it would make a good movie and they have quite a few opinions on who should play the lead parts. I actually find this very interesting because I can't "cast" the roles. To me my characters are very real and very specific and trying to imagine a particular actor in the parts is difficult. Of course, I'm thinking about things like "oh, he's not tall enough or he's too young" when I know full well that Hollywood does not consider those issues germane to such things. Hollywood magic can change the colors of eyes and the appearance of age and size --- my mind can't.

Image

Actually, the role most readers seem most intent on casting is Baptiste. Well, of course... since most of the readers are women and Baptiste is most women's idea of that delicious bad boy, the sexy beast who would be nothing but trouble but, oh, so worth it! I've actually gone out and rented DVDs to see the actors that have been suggested to me. The number one actor choice so far seems to be Goran Visnjic (above ) a.k.a. Dr. Luka Kovac on E/R, a program I have never seen. I rented his version of Spartacus and I will grant you he is gorgeous. If he wants to be Baptiste he has my permission.

Votes have also gone to two French actors I like, Vincent Cassel (right) and Vincent Perez. Both are tall, ultra-cool, very sexy-looking men who have played roles in movies that I liked a lot. Vincent Cassel was in The Crimson River movies with Jean Reno and it's hard for me to imagine a woman alive not responding to those two on the same screen. Then there is Anthony Delon (left), the super-delicious actor from Masterpiece Theater's production of Frenchman's Creek. Actually, with that one I can definitely see it. The hair, the accent, the body, the smile --- in fact I can pretty much forget the first three for that smile.

ImageImage

It is nice to daydream about such things, I'll admit. And I just love it when I get one of those emails saying, "I read your book and you just have to get it to (fill in name of sexy actor), he'd make a perfect Baptiste!" Maybe the next time I get one of those "we can get your novel to Hollywood" calls, I'll refer the caller to my readers. They know better than I do what would be best for the movie.

Thanks for reading.

From: Binguliana

Monday January 28, 2008

The first three days in LA we didn´t do much, because my dad had his meetings and my sister was sick (I just can´t understand how she got sick there! I was kind of angry...) We went to Newport and Laguna Beach.
Then, the Warner Bros Studio Tour: We saw all the places where ER, Cold Case and Without a Trace is filmed, and where Friends was filmed (we sat on the same sofa that they sat =)) It is very interesting how they film all of that... We saw Goran Visnjic (Luka, from ER)!!!! I just couldn´t belive it, I started to cry!!!!I mean, we saw him like 3 seconds, but he said Hi with his hand and smiled.......it´s just soooooooooooo amazing!!! Well, the whole story....We got there and the tour guide asked us which were our favorites shows, so I said ER and Gilmore Girls...she was very nice, and loved ER too, so she kind of showed us the most places where ER is filmed as she could (The Ambulance Bay, the entrance, Jumbo Mart)...I was very lucky, because they weren´t filming ER right now (it was lunch time).,so we could look (because the door was opened) the stage (I mean, the inside of ER, but of course, we couldn´t go in), so aparently, the actors had just left to have lunch. I had lost all my hope of seeing Goran or Maura, becuase she told me that they weren´t here today. She told me that today was there Linda Cardellini, and she didn´t remember who else. So when we were leaving the stage in the "bus" I saw him!!!!!He was sitting on the stair of his trailer!!! I don´t know if I waved my hand back, because I didn´t know what I was doing, then I started to laugh and cry....not even my sister, mom or dad could belive it!!!He was weraing his BLUE shirt and had is glasses on... Well....that´s all, then the tour finished!!! I´m sure that my and my mom´s prays had something to do....This was officialy the best day of my trip, or life! We didn´t see anybody else! After lunch, we went to Beverly Hillis. We went to Hollywood (the Kodak Theater and Walk Of Fame), It was disapointing, we thought it was very different. We also went to Beverly Hills again (probably we saw the Movie Stars Homes, but we didn´t recogniza them, cause we didn´t take the tour). We went to see the Crystal Cathedral, is very beautiful! Then next day, we took our plane back to Chile =(

I'm going to offer a warning with this link as it might offend some people, though if you consider that it is done tongue firmly planted in cheek, it's kind of funny. That said, there is a cute Goran reference in the Famous Croatians section of this article: http://www.stopmikelupica.com/2008/02/2008_olympic_preview_croatia.php

Actually that made me laugh out loud. But - didn't Croatia declare independence from Serb dominated Jugoslavia, not from Serbia? Am I being picky? Do I care? Why am I not cleaning out my freezer instead of doing this? And why, if Spock had green blood, was his tongue pink?

Shellie, I think there were divisions because Serbia wanted to retain areas of land that the others also claimed so while it was a division of Yugoslavia, it was also a split from Serbis. I could be wrong, but, I think that's how the division came about.

I personally loved the Goran interviewing Goran clip..lol

Akvinta Croatian Vodka

As if the Croatians rubbing our noses in the fact that they have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world wasn't enough, they have to add to it by making a vodka filtered in things like gold and platinum.

Akvinta Vodka is launching in parts European made from Italian Wheat and filtered through 5 different environments, mostly because they're concerned about your hangover. The stuff is filtered through birch charcoal, marble, silver, gold, and finally platinum. Once they've done that they mix it with purified water then run it through the process again. It makes me wonder what's in Italian Wheat that requires so much filtering, but think of how regal your tongue will feel! Bling, Bling baby!

Akvinta Vodka

Edit: I forgot, they have that dude from ER too. He's Croatian. That Goran Visnjic, he's so hot right now.

such a basket-case

I've spent the last two days proofreading my father's dissertation. The fact in itself is without significance and doesn't bother me, since said dissertation consists of 60 pages of financial accounting and I can't understand shit. What ticks me is that he wrote half of it using diacriticals (as dictated by Romanian grammar) and the other half without them. And oh, if only he'd done two chapters with and the other two without, but he has them mixed up in the same sentence, for fuck's sake. And guess who has to clean that one up when he's done?

It's going to be hell, but whatever.
Apart from that, everything's peachy.

Comment, and I will pick six of your interests on your user page. You then can post this on your journal with the answers.

sigla picked:

7000 km.
Part of a song title by Omul cu Sobolani (see below). The full title is '7000 km. in aer' ('7000 km. in the air', something like that) and I was very much into it in my senior year at the Academy. It's good for the desperate, over-worked soul.

cats that run funny
My cat does. And you wouldn't believe how amusing it is until you actually see it. There's a point where his front legs fail to keep upp with his hind legs and it all results in a sideways skid that sends him face-first into whatever solid obstacle happens to be on his trajectory.

Welcome to Sarajevo
A 1997 film about the war in Bosnia as seen by a British reporter who eventually gets caught up in things when he decides to help evacuate the children in a Sarajevo orphanage. I think I've seen it six times, but I still cry at the end scenes. Also, it has Tomasso Albinoni on the soundtrack. And Goran Visnjic playing a sweet guy who get killed in the most idiotic of ways.

wft
I bet you thought this was a misspelling of WTF, didn't you? WFT stands for wherefreakstalk.com., a message board I've been on for three years. Long story. Basically, if you know about it, you know about it, it's a bit hard to explain otherwise.

Omul cu Sobolani
Or OCS. My favorite Romanian band and pretty much the only Romanian stuff I listen to. It has good music and lyrics. Gasp!

mom-isms
Sometimes my mother just needs to be quoted, for the sake of posterity. She says things that cannot be classified under anything else but 'Mom-isms'

Character Theme Song Meme

I already did this a while back, but i feel like having a re-installment.
So. Give me a character/pairing/threesome/group/whatever from a fandom I know and I'll upload a song that I think fits them. God knows I have so many songs that remind me of fandoms it's ridiculous.

Go ahead.

Either I misread the men part, either there was a mistake somewhere...somehow because I can't even begin to understand what Leonardo "Goldilocks" Di Caprio is doing on the list. I guess a lot of pre-teens voted....(no offence intended to really young ...girls)
